On DVD: Wall-E 3-Disc Special Edition (Pixar, 2008) November 30, 2008

Continuing the tradition of pushing the limits of computer animation, Pixar has painted Wall-E into a masterpiece. Using mostly body language as a tool of communication between the two main characters, intelligent computer “cameras” and societal critiques (more on that in a bit), Wall-E can be enjoyed by everyone.

The 3-Disc DVD comes with a never-before seen short (the impressionable Burn-E), a separate disc full of special features and a third disc containing the digital copy of the movie (think laptop and iPod compatibility).

The highlight of Disc 1 is the featurette about the movie’s sound design; composition, sound effects, and more. I was expecting some sort of info about the voices of Wall-E and Eve (are they kids? did they T-Pain that sumbitch?) and how they came to use the song from “2001: A Space Odyssey” (i was waiting for it, too dammit), and how they thought of the idea to use Apple’s “powering up” sound effect when Wall-E fully charges from the sun (c’mon pixar i was waiting for somebody to talk about that shit. it was genius!).

Disc 2 contains hella (HELLA) featurettes, one in particular that breaks down a scene with commentary by Pixarians (i just made that shit up), their role and how they did what they do. Turns out that for one small scene, about 30-40 heads are involved (shading the cockroach, animating the dust, painting the background, etc.) By the time the segment is over, you’re exhausted with all the thoughts of just how many heads were involved in the movie period. By the looks of these special features, Pixar employs hella white and asian people. I still have yet to watch “The Pixar Story” on this disc but I’m pretty sure it’s solid (without it being too “documentaryish”).

The packaging is solid, too. Sold as one whole piece, Disc 1 slides out of a pocket on the left side, opening up folder-style, with the rest of the discs opening up the same way on the right side. It comes with a code to activate Disc 3, so don’t lose that if you plan on buying it. The artwork is embossed, too.

Besides the obvious message in the movie for us humans to appreciate the environment and not take the earth’s natural resources for granted, there’s a lot of important underlying messages. Corporate monopoly, the threat of technology on humans, capitalism, emotional repression and detachment from self and “big brother” all come into play here. Placing the humans on a space “cruise ship”, complete with all types of stereotypical cruise culture (i would know, i was on one a couple months ago), was/is a clever scathing critique on class privilege and corporate media. Watching the special features and seeing who is behind all of this – a bunch of adult nerds of all ages – really makes you think about who this movies’ audience really is.

If anything, watch this shit and learn to appreciate one of my favorite characters: M-O (Microbe Obliterator).

Oh, and wassup with Wall-E being dark, dirty and working class, while Eve is white, sterile and more intelligent? That’s racist, and a whole ‘nother post in itself ;)

The term Black Friday (that’s racist!) originated in Philly because mass amount of shoppers would go to the mall the day after thanksgiving and create hella traffic, giving police and traffic enforcement a huge headache. It also means that stores are in the “black”, or turning a profit on sales. Being in the Red means losing money (that’s racist!).

I wasn’t one of the billions who woke up early to get in line at (fill in your favorite store here), pitch a tent (not in that way), brave the cold and compete with total strangers for (insert your favorite thingy here), while shooting other customers or trampling employees to death. I don’t want to be out saving money and then trying to save a life. I also don’t want to be around racist security guards and/or ignorant parents who would be quick to racially profile youth of color at Southcenter (they did catch homedude, tho).

I did the smart thing and started shopping online on Wednesday night/Thanksgiving morning. I got most of my shopping done (‘cept for one person), and will only have to worry about my secret santa at work and possible gift exchanges amongst cousins (did someone say dollar store for the fam? me thinks so). I’ll be honest in saying that I shopped hella for myself (shout out to Amazon.com), but that was a no-brainer already =)

Congrats to my dude Cesar for running the Seattle marathon today, in honor of AnakBayan Seattle’s anniversary. Watching all different types of folks cross the finish line was inspiring….i’ll try to get my Speed Walker on first before any of that.

Enjoy the new look of the site. Over 4,000 hits with no promo on my part. That’s hood platinum!

Superheroes have taken the spotlight at the annual Gingerbread Village in the lobby of the downtown Sheraton Seattle Hotel.

This year’s sweet edifices have “A Superhero Holiday” theme.

The display, now in its 16th year, raises money for the Northwest chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

One creation, “Santa Called in Sick … ” was put together by the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties. In it, Batman is driving Santa’s sleigh.

The display officially opens free to the public today at 1400 Sixth Ave., and runs through Jan. 4.

I just saw this on Yahoo News. Here’s an excerpt of the article, with my bold highlights:

  • Leslie Owen Collier of Charleston, Mo. She was convicted for unauthorized use of a pesticide and violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
  • Milton Kirk Cordes of Rapid City, S.D. Cordes was convicted of conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act, which prohibits importation into the country of wildlife taken in violation of conservation laws.
  • Richard Micheal Culpepper of Mahomet, Ill., who was convicted of making false statements to the federal government.
  • Brenda Jean Dolenz-Helmer of Fort Worth, Texas, for reporting or helping cover up a crime.
  • Andrew Foster Harley of Falls Church, Va. Harley was convicted of wrongful use and distribution of marijuana and cocaine.
  • Obie Gene Helton of Rossville, Ga., whose offense was unauthorized acquisition of food stamps.
  • Carey C. Hice Sr. of Travelers Rest, S.C., who was convicted of income tax evasion.
  • Geneva Yvonne Hogg of Jacksonville, Fla., convicted of bank embezzlement.
  • William Hoyle McCright Jr. of Midland, Texas, who was sentenced for making false entries, books, reports or statements to a bank.
  • Paul Julian McCurdy of Sulphur, Okla., who was sentenced for misapplication of bank funds.
  • Robert Earl Mohon Jr. of Grant, Ala., who was convicted of conspiracy to distribute marijuana.
  • Ronald Alan Mohrhoff of Los Angeles, who was convicted for unlawful use of a telephone in a narcotics felony.
  • Daniel Figh Pue III of Conroe, Texas, convicted of illegal treatment, storage and disposal of a hazardous waste without a permit.
  • Orion Lynn Vick of White Hall, Ark., who was convicted of aiding and abetting the theft of government property.

Bush also commuted the prison sentences of John Edward Forte of North Brunswick, N.J., and James Russell Harris of Detroit, Mich. Both were convicted of cocaine offenses.

Under the Constitution, the president’s power to issue pardons is absolute and cannot be overruled.

John Edward Forte? Of the Fugees camp? I remember reading his story years ago about how he got caught up in distribution of cocaine. I might even have that Source magazine article somewhere…

The first U.S. President of color is elected, and now there’s the hiring of the first Asian American MLB manager. Racism really doesn’t exist anymore!

Don Wakamatsu introduced as Mariners manager

Seattle Times staff reporters

Don Wakamatsu was introduced as the Mariners’ new manager today at Safeco Field.

Wakamatsu, 45, served as the Oakland Athletics bench coach last season. Before that, he was a coach for the Texas Rangers from 2003 to 2007.

The announcement was made by Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik, who said he started with a list of 35 candidates before narrowing it to a list of seven to interview.

Zduriencik said it was important to bring in a manager “who would not only see the immediate, but the big picture, of this organization.”

DUBLIN, Ga. – He shot a man twice and felt so good about it, police said, a rapper wrote a song describing the shooting and calling out the victim by name. A judge sentenced 25-year-old Rico Todriquez Wright Monday to spend the next 20 years in prison after his victim mentioned the hip hop confession to police.

Chad Blue, 28, told police he had known Wright before the September 2006 shooting, but that the men weren’t friendly. He testified companions egged Wright on as he chased and shot his victim in the thigh and groin.

Later, Blue told police he recognized Wright’s voice on a CD, rapping “Chad Blue knows how I shoot.”

Wright was sentenced to 20 years for two counts of aggravated assault. He will spend another 20 years on probation.
