“Being here is especially meaningful to me because I consider myself to be an honorary AAPI member, and I think I’ve got some pretty good credentials,” – Obama speaking at a recently held Asian and Pacific Islander sponsored fund raiser.

Obama an honorary Asian American / Pacific Islander? What are your thoughts?

How about anyone, especially non-people of color, calling themselves an honorary __________, just because all/some of their friends are __________? Is it different when other people of color call themselves an honorary (insert ethnicity of color here)?

I consider myself to be a honky. and I consider Obama to be full of shit.

both statements are only considerations, beliefs, and are not necessarily facts (but really, they are).

but really, what has Obama done for the AAPI community? regardless of what he has or hasn’t done, how does he qualify himself an honorary member? and what does “honorary member” even mean?

Hmm…doesn’t the title “Honorary ” is typically given to people by your friends of that ethnicity, and not a title you give yourself?

Didn’t Obama go to school somewhere in the pacific? I think he went to elementary school in Singapore or something.

I agree with Adam. In that vein, it probably stems from his upbringing with an Indonesian Father and hapa/indo sister, and growing up in Hawaii with many AAPIs.

Cool blog Daps!

On what my thoughts are about it, I see no reason to make a mountain out of a molehill for his attempt at making an ‘in’ with the hosts of the fundraiser, given his upbringing.

When in Rome…
